JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP -- When she moved into her farmhouse more than a decade ago, Diane Jorstad didn't realize it would inspire her to return to her true love, art.
"This old farm got me started," she said. "Many of the buildings had slate on them. I found some old paints from when I was 20 and started doing landscapes."
Though Jorstad had always loved painting and drawing, she didn't pursue a career in the visual arts. She instead became a nurse.
Painting on the slate was just a hobby. But as she worked with her newfound canvases, leaving a border of slate around the landscapes as a frame, her art drew some attention.
She began hanging and selling her slate paintings in a Cabot restaurant, Boldy's.
"People started going in there just to see what new paintings were up," she said.
She sold them there until the store closed five years later. By then...
